High School Cross-Country Track and Nature Trail Construction

Project Profile

Project: High School Cross-Country Track and Nature Trail Construction

Project Sponsor: Private Education Institution

Location: Northern Virginia

Scope: As part of a design/build team, ER&M was contracted to provide design input and construction services for the restoration of 3,600 linear feet of overgrown woodland trail and the clearing and construction of approximately 2,600 linear feet of new trail.

ER&M cleared debris from the old path and restored the base with the addition of new material. The new trail cut through very thick stands of poison ivy, interspersed with 4-6″ cal. trees and various size woody debris. ER&M cleared and re-graded the new path, prior to spreading 5″ of clean wood chips.

In addition, ER&M bridged a number of low spots, using a permeable “geo-web” product that would lift the trail up above the ponded water, while still allowing for run-off to flow through the path without eroding it. This successfully completed project restored and extended access to, and through, a valuable on-campus native forest.
